IT-Recycling dismantles server room at Gouw-IT in Zaltbommel

IT-Recycling recently completed a special assignment. The complete dismantling of a server room at Gouw-IT in Zaltbommel. Not the equipment, but the physically built infrastructure itself was the focus this time. The room, built in 2014 and state of the art at the time, was dismantled because Gouw-IT is switching to fully cloud-based work as well as relocating. The new location no longer provides a physical server room and the property owner was not interested in keeping it either.

High-quality infrastructure finished with precision

Although the space technically could have lasted for years, complete disassembly was unavoidable. The server equipment and data carriers had already been safely removed and destroyed on site. Now IT Recycling focused on the complete dismantling of the physical infrastructure. In the process, nothing was left to chance.

First, in cooperation with grid operator Alliander, the power supply was safely disconnected. Next, all power wiring was removed, including switch boxes and two UPS systems whose batteries were disassembled separately.

Safe handling of technology and the environment

The gas extinguishing system, consisting of six cylinders of 450-bar inert gas, was also expertly disconnected and disposed of to a specialized gas engineering company for pressureless processing. All cable trays, network cables, computer floors, system walls and even the vault door that gave access to the server room were carefully removed.

Another important part of the project was the two large chillers on the roof. These systems contained CFC refrigerant and about 800 liters of glycol. The agents were first safely removed, then the cooling engines and condensers were lifted from the roof using a crane. Finally, all associated pipes were also removed from the building.

Sustainable and professional approach

With this clearance, IT Recycling once again shows what it is also strong in. Namely the professional, safe and sustainable dismantling of a data center. The focus is not only on technology and logistics, but also on safety, environmental impact and the reuse of materials.

It’s always a shame to tear down such a beautiful space, but for Gouw-IT this represents a fresh step toward the future. The move to the cloud enables further growth, while the old server room provides space for a new use.
