Many companies in our industry list on their websites wonderful certifications they have or often think they have.
In fact, only one certification is really important and that is WEEELABEX.
It is also required by law.
We advise everyone to first carefully check whether the party you want to do business with has this certification.
Checking this is very easy; it is simply on the WEEELABEX website.
This certification is the new European standard, mandatory for processors of discarded computers.
This therefore includes companies that destroy data and/or buy up batches of used computers and trade them back on the market.
This is therefore a legal standard to which all processors and producers must adhere since July 1, 2015.
The standard provides uniform rules for the collection, storage, transport, processing, recycling and reuse of electronic waste.
The purpose of the standard is to be able to determine whether companies that process electronic waste (i.e., including depreciated computer hardware) achieve the minimum required recycling rate.
For example, the European community has determined that at least 85% of end-of-life computers should be reused.
By reuse, this means reuse as an appliance or raw material such as metals or plastics.
Past experience has shown that much computer-related waste ends up in the developing world where it is reprocessed in an extremely environmentally unfriendly manner.
In addition, it is also often harmful to the health of the people involved in the process.
Politicians therefore decided to do something about it and introduce a quality standard.
There are high requirements attached to achieving the standard, which can only be achieved by the best companies.
Hence the somewhat strange name: “WEEE” stands for Waste of Electronic and Electric Equipment and “LABEX” for Label of Excellence.

Certification for the new standard is through a very comprehensive audit and batch test.
The audit looks not only at the effectiveness of the recycling process, but also at quality, environmental management, health & safety and data destruction.
To participate in the audit, the company must already hold ISO9001 and/or 14001 certification.
However, the audit exceeds the standards around ISO9001 and ISO14001 and has even more stringent requirements.
During the subsequent batch test, a quantity of written-off computers are processed and tested or data are destroyed.
During this processing, the results are carefully analyzed to ultimately calculate accurate recycling figures in conjunction with the audit.
This means that we can present our customers, for whom we collect written-off computers and/or destroy data, with rock-solid figures on the processing rate of all the computer waste we have collected.
This is also important for you, because if you choose a non-certified processor, you run the risk of substantial fines.
