Improperly destroying your hardware: risks
New laptops up and running or is there still a pile of outdated and defective laptops in a corner? Don’t just throw old laptops in the trash! This is because improper recycling of hardware carries risks. A data breach is perhaps the biggest risk. Confidential data can fall into the wrong hands after which a data breach occurs. Also, personal information left behind after improperly destroying a hard drive can be used for identity theft.
There is also an ecological aspect to improperly recycling hardware. For example, a hard drive contains harmful materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Certified destruction reduces the risk of spreading these materials with environmental and public health implications.
