Phone recycling

Cell phone recycling is also important for the environment. Whether or not combined with other computer waste, we also pick up cell phones for recycling. This service is for businesses only and not for individuals.

Would you like to turn in old phones? We’ll pick them up from you for free, provided that the total weight—possibly combined with computer waste—exceeds 200 kilograms. If the total weight is less than 200 kilograms, additional fees will apply; see our pricing here.

Recycling cell phones

Do you think your company’s old phones still have value? If so, your business can also turn in those old cell phones by letting us buy them from you.

When selling your old phone to us, it’s very important that there is no passcode and no cloud account associated with it. If there is, we won’t be able to buy the old phone from you. Another consideration is the confidential information that may still be stored on your old phones before they’re recycled. We can certify the destruction of the data on your old phone.

By weight, cell phones make up barely a part of the mix we recycle each year. Still, proper recycling of phones is important for our environment. So at IT Recycling, smartphones are separated and handled separately.

How do we proceed?

First of all, there is a battery in every old phone. This is usually a lithium battery. According to the new WEEELABEX standards, the battery must be removed from the phone before further processing. Click here if you want to learn more about lithium battery recycling. Especially with an iPhone, this is a tricky job. Another problem with lithium batteries is that they are quite a fire hazard. Especially if they get damaged and short-circuit internally, batteries can spontaneously catch fire. At IT Recycling, the lithium batteries from the phone are therefore stored separately and specially fireproofed.

In addition, every phone has a TFT screen. This screen contains mercury. The WEEELABEX The standard requires that screens larger than 10 square centimeters be removed from the device before we recycle the phones.

So each phone must be taken apart separately. What remains of the phone after the battery and screen are removed is for phone recycling.

In conjunction with data destruction

With most phones we receive for recycling, we have been instructed to destroy the sensitive data on them. The best way to destroy the data on a phone is to destroy the entire phone with our hard drive shredder. Because the memory chips in a phone are very small, a fine shredder is needed.

Always back up

Before turning in an old phone, it is important to make a back up. After all, many phones contain sensitive information and it would be a shame if that completely disappears after you have a new phone and turn in the old phones to us. Need help making a backup? Feel free to give us a call, we are happy to help.

Reusing an old smartphone

The very best way of recycling is not recycling, but reusing the old phone. With phones that we receive, we look at whether they are still – as phones – possibly usable.

In practice, however, this is very rare because very often a depleted phone still has a password and/or Cloud account on it. Passwords can be bypassed with a hard reset but a Cloud account renders any phone unusable. Want to know more about data destruction on phones? Then read more about it in the blog on data destruction for phones.

Do you still have a pile of old cell phones lying around that are no longer being used by your employees Let us pick them up for recycling and or data destruction. Then contact us today and we will make sure the phones are fully recycled and all sensitive data is destroyed.
